Section Reports
SECTION 1 (Borders: California, Milwaukee, Armitage)
1) The problem property at 2108 N. Bingham, that has historically been involved in gang and gun violence, was vacated by the City of Chicago Department of Buildings shortly after a young girl was shot outside the residence on June 6th. Now that the property has been vacated, residents have reported that it has been "very quiet" and it "feels like a whole new neighborhood."
2) The problem tenants have been evicted from the residence on the 2700 block of W. Julia Court and local residents reported that it is quiet again. One of the tenants evicted from the Julia Court property had also lived at the problem property at 2108 Bingham and was associated with the Cobras gang. Residents also reported that the tenants were seen lighting sparklers and using them to mark their names in the sidewalk as they were cleaning out their belongings after being evicted. The fire department arrived at the scene after residents called 911 and were able to take care of the situation.
3) A few days prior to the tenant eviction on the 2700 block of W. Julia Court, there was an alleged sexual assault involving one of the female tenants that is also believed to be gang related.
action: Residents are urged to continue calling 911 to report the continued violent gang and criminal activity.
SECTION 2 (Borders: Rockwell, Lyndale, Western, Milwaukee)
1) There was a gang related shooting reported by a gang member on June 26th on the 2000 block of N. Western, however, police investigating the matter have not been able to find evidence that a shooting did indeed take place.
2) Congress Pizza – No representatives from Congress Pizza were present at this CAPS meeting.
3) A representative from Concord Music Hall was in attendance.
action: Residents are strongly urged to call 911 to report any illegal patron or employee behavior at businesses along Milwaukee Ave.
SECTION 3 (Borders: Rockwell, Fullerton, Western, Lyndale)
1) There was an incident reported outside Beat 1431 at Kedzie between Fullerton and Lyndale in which a teenager knocked a woman over on the sidewalk with his bicycle. A second teenager involved on a skateboard matches the description of one of the kids who were reported last meeting harassing people at Western and Belden.
2) A resident reported that the properties on 2529-37 W. Fullerton are being sold and the neighbors across the alley from those properties are observing homeless people entering the properties as well as a proliferation of rats. Liz Rios suggested that the neighbors contact the alderman's office.
action: Residents are strongly urged to call 911 to report gang activity and 311 for graffiti.
SECTION 4 (Borders: California, Fullerton, Rockwell, Milwaukee)
1) During the day of July 10th, a resident reported that a neighbor witnessed a couple young boys moving garbage dumpsters at Goethe Elementary School and used them to climb onto the roof of one of the lower buildings by the water collection cistern in the playground. School books were then seen being thrown into the dumpsters. The police were called, however, a neighbor did not see them get out of their police car to investigate. Liz Rios said that she would check into this with the school.
2) Kids and adults continue to periodically play basketball at the Goethe Elementary School playlot beyond curfew and late into the evening/early morning. Residents have been calling 911 to address this issue. A resident also requested that hours of the playground be clearly posted in the area, possibly even on the basketball hoop backboards for better visibility. Liz Rios also mentioned that the school should be posting hours for the park and that a letter should be written to the principal at Goethe and the Alderman's office requesting that signs be posted.
action: Residents are strongly urged to call 911 to report illegal parking and other criminal activity and 311 for graffiti.
SECTION 5 (Borders: California, Logan Boulevard, Rockwell, Fullerton)There were no issues reported in this section.action: Residents are strongly urged to call 911 to report gang activity and 311 for graffiti.
SECTION 6 (Borders: Rockwell, Logan Boulevard, Western, Fullerton)
1) There was an arson attempt caught on video on June 26th within the 2400 block of N. Campbell between Campbell and Artesion. The individual captured in the video feed appears to be an older gentlemen carrying a suitcase. There were other fires reported in the neighborhood during that same evening according to the Chicago Fire Department and an Arson Unit is investigating potential patterns in these crimes.
2) A neighbor witnessed a scooter being stolen on the 2400 Block of Rockwell by 3 young African American males. The neighbor has filed a police report.
3) Monday morning July 18th, between 8:30am and 9am a resident noticed that the white house on the corner of the 2400 block of Artesian had all of its front windows broken out. Residents believe that more squatters are living on the premises and are anticipating continued problems. Liz Rios suggested notifying the Aldermans Office.
4) The mural at the dog park that community members painted was later tagged with graffiti. Residents request support from the police to be watchful for potential future late night graffiti to the mural.
5) Residents reported a group of transient "travelers" that are camping by the entrance on the expressway between Western avenue and the Dog Park. Residents are looking for police to help encourage these individuals to move away from the area to discourage their drinking and panhandling.
