March 20, 2014

General Announcements

Strategies to Address New Problems
Neighbors are encouraged to create and use phone trees to alert neighbors of new problems on their block in addition to calling 911. Posting problems on Every Block was also suggested. Getting to know your neighbor is important.

Condolences
Condolences were made for Detective Dennis McLaughlin who died unexpectedly of a heart attack on Feb 6.

Earth Day
Earth Day will be celebrated at the Humboldt Park Boat House, 1359 N. Sacramento on Saturday April 26 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. It is sponsored by Block Club Federation, Friends of the Park and the Chicago Park District.

Arrest Report
1) There were 18 arrests for the reporting period since the last CAPS meeting. 
2) An arrest was made in the far South Side for the man committing robberies on the Blue Line. He was discovered through community alerts.

Reported Shots Fired
There was a report of 5 shots fired in the alley on the North side McLean on March 11.

Graffiti/Tagging
There has been increased graffiti and tagging reported in all areas of our Beat 1431. Please report all graffiti and tagging to 311. Court Advocates have been following graffiti cases where taggers have been sentenced to clean up graffiti and tagging.

Section Reports
SECTION 1 (Borders: California, Milwaukee, Armitage)
1) Bernardo Catalan, reported to be a Spanish Cobra who lived on Bingham Street, was shot and killed at Cortland and Rockwell on March 11. The Spanish Cobras and the MLDs have been in gang conflicts near there.
2) The house on the 2700 block of W. Francis Place where known Spanish Lords used to hang out, has been sold and no gang members have been seen recently.
3) There was an arrest for graffiti on the 2000 block of Point.
4) There was an arrest for delivery of cocaine from Des Plaines.
action: Residents are urged to continue calling 911 to report the ongoing gang and criminal activity.

SECTION 2 (Borders: Rockwell, Lyndale, Western, Milwaukee)
1) Five gun shots were fired on March 11th between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm in an alley north of McLean Ave. There were no victims and no vehicles were hit. Two black males, 5’6” to 6’, one with braids, were seen hanging out nearby.
2) Congress Pizza has been found in violation of many city codes and is being forced by the city to meet the nuisance agreements made with the Department of Business Affairs in 2012. No new calls to 911 have been made in the past two months. There was an online report that a patron found a cockroach in his pizza.
3) There were two battery charges at the Concord Music Hall. On Feb 15th, there was an altercation inside with 4-5 guys fighting who then got aggressive with the Concord security.  On March 8th, at a rock show there was a moshing incident inside the club and a fight broke out. One guy was hit and broke a tooth. 911 was called both times and there was one arrest each night.
4) There was an arrest on Feb 27th when a rifle was pointed at a victim inside a house on the 2000 block of N. Campbell.
5) Alexander, the nephew of Anthony Jones, a known gang member, turned himself in for shooting and killing someone in another district.
action: Residents are strongly urged to call 911 to report shooting, illegal parking and any illegal patron or employee behavior at the businesses on Milwaukee Ave.

SECTION 3 (Borders: Rockwell, Fullerton, Western, Lyndale)
There were no shared reports for this section.

SECTION 4 (Borders: California, Fullerton, Rockwell, Milwaukee)
1) Parents are still leaving their cars parked illegally when dropping their kids off at Goethe School. Sgt Reyes said police have been going by and saw they are double parking but didn’t see them blocking the streets. They will check Lyndale and alleys for garages being blocked in the area. Sgt Reyes will bring this up at a Parents’ Patrol Meeting.

SECTION 5 (Borders: California, Logan Boulevard, Rockwell, Fullerton)
1) Neighbors are concerned about a Motorcycle Club in the building on the north west corner of Rockwell and Fullerton. The building had huge letters MFFM on the front windows. There was concern that those letters stood for Mongols Forever Forever Mongols, (a notorious and dangerous national motorcycle club). Sgt Reyes said the police knew about this when the building was leased 5 months ago and that it was not the Mongols Motorcycle Group, rather the Mexteca Motorcycle Club.

SECTION 6 (Borders: Rockwell, Logan Boulevard, Western, Fullerton)
1) There is one homeless man along the Kennedy Expressway between Western and Artesian that has a huge and growing pile of trash. He has been seen fighting with another man, who drives up in a small white car with a license plate that begins with R19. They are fighting over garbage cans and trash is getting spilled all over the area. Sgt Reyes suggested that the Alderman’s office be contacted. Chicago Streets and Sanitation has to post a notice in advance saying that the area will be cleaned up before they can come in clean the area.action: Residents are strongly urged to call 911 to report gang activity and 311 for graffiti.

Neighboring Beat Report: 2300 block of Altgeld and Montana
1) Police have been checking this area but have not seen any problems.
2) Los Recuerdos Nightclub on the 2300 block of Fullerton, where there was a recent shooting, remains closed for building violations.
