Meeting Minutes
Sept 1, 2005
The next meeting is scheduled for Oct 6, 2005, 7:00 pm at the 14th District, 2150 N. California.
Officers Present: PO Trempe, PO Ortiz, PO Crawford, PO Strazante, PO Rodriguez, and Sgt Nieves
SECTION 1
1) There were guys with bats and sticks going after a car that had been in accident near 2074 Stave.around 530pm on Aug 31. Then later that night around midnight 5 shots were fired from a Red Toyota.
2) There have been a lot of drug sales and gang activity in the alley between the Congress Theater and Bingham near 2113 Bingham during the past month. Gang members are putting the drugs in small plastic bags and putting them in their mouth when the police come by.
3) There also continues to be criminal gang activity and drug sales on Attrill under the El tracks. Gang members are often seen gathering around 5pm.
4) Cristobel and other drug dealers are also often seen racing around on motor cycles in the area. And Charles Dryer often drives by blasting his boom box so loud it set off car alarms.
5) Two brothers in the Juarez family were drinking and fighting in the street near 2118 Bingham. They were seen carrying baseball bats and smashing out windows.
6) Ricky Vasquez has pled guilty and is going to jail. He will get out in 2007.
7) A roll call attended by Alderman Flores was held in sector one on Aug 12. And Sgt Nieves announced that the 14th district is running a mission every night in this section.
action: Bingham and Stave streets remain a consistent area of reported criminal activity and require continued police attention and calls to 911. It was suggested that we follow up on buildings that have been a constant home for drug dealers and gang members. Sgt Nieves will have Sgt Torres in Buildings at the 14th give us an update at the next meeting and put problem houses on the fast track. Community members also suggested that speed bumps on Bingham and Stave would be useful.
SECTION 2
1) It has been quiet in section 2 during the past month.
action: Residents are encouraged to keep a vigilant eye on gang loitering and drug dealing and calling 911.
SECTION 3
1) On Aug 15 there was a shooting on Lyndale by the Liquor Store and a MLD gang member was hit in the leg. The shooter and the gun were found at 2206 Campbell. He is being charged with aggravated battery.
2) On Aug 31 around midnight there was a shooting at Danny's Liquors. One guy threw rocks at another guy who pulled out a gun and started shooting. One shot went through the store window. Both guys ran west. Many police showed up quickly.
3) Wisco has been hit with gang graffiti and needs to clean it up promptly.
action: Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and call 911 with any suspicious activity. Police will look at putting 2206 Campbell on the nuisance abatement program.
SECTION 4
1) It has been quiet in section 4 during the past month.
action: Police and residents to continue focused attention on gang activity in this area.
SECTION 5
1) Gang members in a red van have been seen hanging out in the alley behind 2418 N. Washtenaw.
action: Police and residents to maintain attention on gang activity in this section.
SECTION 6
1) Homeless people are still on the South side of the Kennedy Expressway between Western, Artesian and Logan. They have been chased off several times but return the same day. They have knocked out the street lights along the sidewalk there and have been seen drinking, loitering and littering. Residents should call IDOT, Illinois Dept of Transportation, at 847-705-4610 to report them and ask for their removal.
Recurring Problem Areas for BEAT 1431
1) Gangs and drug activity in Section 1 remains a consistent problem and needs more proactive action by the police.
2) Residents should continue to call 911 and are encouraged to establish phone trees to increase the number of 911 calls.
